10 Budget-Friendly Date Nights and Family Activities During a Cost of Living Crisis

Two weeks ago, the Reserve Bank lowered the OCR by 0.25%, bringing it down from 5.5% to 5.25% – phew! Although this change doesn’t seem like a lot, many of us were breathing a sigh of relief, taking this drop as a sign that inflation is (thankfully) more under control and that interest rates will begin to slowly decrease.

Although the New Zealand economy seems to be moving in a more positive direction, our mortgages are still high as well as our everyday costs, and the unemployment rate is still expected to rise to 5% by the end of 2024.

We know that it’s been challenging for many families and couples to enjoy their usual weekend activities without feeling the financial pinch. So we thought we’d write a fun article this week! As I think you’ll find that with a bit of creativity and resourcefulness, you can still have a great time with your loved ones without spending too much. In this article, we’ll uncover ten ideas for budget-friendly date nights and/or family activities that will keep the fun alive without breaking the bank.

   1. Rediscover the Great Outdoors

Nature is a timeless, free source of entertainment and relaxation, and we have an abundance of it here in New Zealand! Whether you’re planning a romantic date or a family day out, our backyard offers endless possibilities. From beaches to forests, parks to mountains – there’s something for everyone!

For Families: Plan a nature scavenger hunt. Create a list of items or creatures to find, such as different types of leaves, stones, or birds. This not only engages the children but also teaches them about nature.

For Date Nights: Take a leisurely stroll during sunset or under the stars. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider a night hike with flashlights or stargazing in a quiet spot.

   2.Cook a Meal Together

Cooking at home is not only more affordable than dining out, but it also allows for a more intimate and enjoyable experience. Whether you’re with your partner or family, cooking together can be a fun and rewarding activity.

For Families: Choose a theme for your cooking night, such as build a pizza night or pasta-making and getting the kids involved in prepping ingredients, making the dinner and setting the table.

For Date Nights: Recreate a meal from your favorite restaurant or try a new recipe together. Light some candles, play soft music, and enjoy the fruits of your labor in a cozy, romantic setting.

   3. Game Night Extravaganza

Game nights are a classic and cost-effective way to spend time with loved ones. Whether you prefer board games, card games, or video games, this activity offers endless hours of fun.

For Families: Make game night a weekly tradition. Let each family member take turns choosing the game, so that it’s fun for everyone.

For Date Nights: Select a game that encourages teamwork or competition, such as a trivia game or a strategy board game. Add an element of fun by setting a friendly wager—like the loser has to do the dishes!

   4. Movie Marathons at Home

With an abundance of streaming services available, you can easily create a movie marathon experience at home without spending much. Whether it’s revisiting a beloved film series or exploring new genres, movie nights can be a great way to unwind.

For Families: Transform your living room into a cozy theater by building a fort with blankets and pillows. Let the kids pick the movies, and prepare popcorn and other movie snacks for the ultimate at-home cinema experience.

For Date Nights: Choose a theme, like classic romance films or thrillers, and make it an event. Dim the lights, prepare some mulled wine or hot chocolate, and snuggle up together on the couch for a cozy night in – such a great activity for winter.

   5. DIY Creative Projects

Engage your creativity with DIY projects that are both fun and budget-friendly. Whether it’s arts and crafts, home improvement, or creating something new from recycled materials, these activities are great for bonding.

For Families: Start a family project, like a scrapbook documenting special moments or a memory jar where everyone writes down something they’re thankful for. You could also try making homemade gifts or decorations together.

For Date Nights: Try a paint-and-sip night at home. Purchase affordable canvases and paints, and set up your own mini art studio. Relax with your favorite beverages as you unleash your creativity together.

   6. Volunteer as a Family or Couple

Volunteering is a wonderful way to spend time together while giving back to the community. It’s a fulfilling experience that can be both fun and meaningful.

For Families: Volunteering as a family teaches children the importance of community service and compassion. Whether it’s helping at a local food bank, participating in a park clean-up, or visiting a nursing home, these activities can be both educational and rewarding.

For Date Nights: Find a cause you both care about, such as animal shelters or environmental conservation, and spend your date volunteering. Not only will you be making a positive impact, but you’ll also create deeper connections with each other through shared experiences.

   7. Explore Local Museums and Art Galleries

Many museums and art galleries offer free or discounted admission, making them excellent options for a budget-friendly day out. These cultural institutions often host exhibitions and events that are both educational and entertaining.

For Families: Make a day of it by visiting a museum that offers interactive exhibits for children. These experiences can spark curiosity and provide valuable learning opportunities outside of the classroom.

For Date Nights: Spend the day exploring a local art gallery or museum, discussing your favorite pieces, and learning something new together. Many cultural venues also host special evening events that could make for a unique and memorable date.

   8. Plan a Staycation

A staycation allows you to enjoy the perks of a vacation without the expense of travel. By exploring your local area as a tourist, you can discover new attractions, restaurants, and activities you might have overlooked.

For Families: Plan a day out in a town close to where you live, look through op-shops, go to a local cafe, have a walk through their botanical gardens or farms.

For Date Nights: Book a night in a local Airbnb or simply spend the night at home with all the vacation vibes—think breakfast in bed, a spa night, or a themed dinner. Explore your city or town like tourists, visiting new places or attending local events.

   9. Attend Community Events

Many communities host free or low-cost events such as outdoor concerts, farmers’ markets, festivals, plays, and movie nights. These events are a great way to get out of the house and enjoy some entertainment without spending much.

For Families: Check your local community calendar for upcoming events like family-friendly festivals, outdoor movie nights, or free concerts. These outings provide an excellent opportunity for the whole family to have fun and meet new people.

For Date Nights: Pack a picnic and head to an outdoor concert or movie in the park. Our head to the markets and make yourself a nice dinner with all the produce you picked out together.

   10. Book Exchange or Library Visits

Reading is a fantastic way to escape reality and enjoy a quiet, budget-friendly activity. Whether you’re a book lover or just looking for something new, book exchanges and libraries offer endless possibilities.

For Families: Organize a book exchange with friends or neighbours, where everyone brings a few books to swap. You can also visit your local library to check out new reads, and participate in story time.

For Date Nights: Spend a leisurely afternoon browsing a local bookstore or library. Pick out a book for each other, and spend some time reading together at a cozy café or at home. Alternatively, you could host a “book club for two,” where you read the same book and discuss it over coffee or wine.

In the face of rising costs, it’s more important than to focus on what truly matters and to be grateful for what we do have —quality time with the people you love. These ten budget-friendly ideas prove that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to create memorable and enjoyable experiences. Remember, the best memories are often made from the simplest moments shared together.
