How to Avoid Overspending in NZ’s Christmas–Summer Sales Season

Every year, I see Kiwis try to avoid overspending at Christmas… and then the sales begin. Black Friday. Cyber Monday. Christmas Week. Boxing Day. New Year’s. The deals keep rolling, and suddenly people who planned to “keep it simple this year” are staring down a maxed-out credit card or three BNPL payments they forgot they signed up for.

If that’s you, I want you to know — nothing is wrong with you. You’re not irresponsible. You’re not “bad with money.”
You’re simply shopping inside a system that isn’t designed for your goals.

What’s Really Going On

Retailers have a very well-designed system for getting you to spend.
Countdowns. Limited stock. Stacked discounts. “Only 3 left.” “Today only.”
It’s psychological, intentional, and highly effective.

However, the real problem is this.
Most people don’t enter sales season with a system of their own.

And a result, when you don’t have your own system, you automatically default to the retailer’s system. Their system leads you to buy more. Your system keeps you on track.

Why This Matters for Kiwi Families

When you don’t plan ahead, it’s easy to avoid overspending Christmas intentions and still end up financially stressed in January.

In New Zealand, December isn’t just Christmas — it’s a six-week financial gauntlet.

We’re dealing with:

    • A sluggish economy
    • Families already under pressure
    • Continuous sales from November through January
    • The rise in Buy Now Pay Later
    • The emotional load of trying to “make Christmas special”

It’s very easy to overspend without realising it.

I call January the money hangover month, because people feel embarrassed, stressed, and frustrated. The new year is supposed to feel fresh — but many families start it already behind.

From My Perspective as a Money Systems Coach

In my work with Kiwi homeowners, I see this truth over and over again:

Overspending happens when you don’t have your own system — so you end up following the retailer’s.

This is why I teach simple, behaviour-based steps that protect you especially during seasons like this.
You don’t need to be strict.
You don’t need to be perfect.
You just need a system that makes spending calm and intentional.

Below is the exact system I recommend — the one that helps families stay intentional during sales season.

THE BUYING-ON-SALE SYSTEM

(My 5-step system designed to protect you during sales season)

01. Start with a Want-List (Your Anchor Point)

A common trap is browsing first and deciding later, which fuels impulse spending.

With a Want-List, you flip the order:

You decide first, then you shop.

This becomes your anchor:

    • It’s made before emotions get involved
    • It’s based on your real priorities
    • It gives you a clear filter: “Does this match what I planned?”

When you have a Want-List, shopping becomes a matching exercise instead of a temptation battle.

02. No-Spend Wishlist Shopping (The Information-Gathering Trip)

In many households, the jump from ‘want’ to ‘buy’ happens instantly.
In my system, you add a crucial middle step:

You shop… without spending.

A No-Spend Wishlist Shopping Trip means you:

    • Go into stores or browse online
    • Find only the items on your Want-List
    • Gather options, prices, colours, and brands
    • Take photos or screenshots
    • Walk away without buying a thing

In-store:

You take photos of:

    • the item
    • the price tag
    • the sale signage
    • any alternatives

Online:

You:

    • add the item to your cart
    • screenshot the cart with the store name
    • repeat on other sites
    • close your tabs

Why it works:

    • You’re collecting data, not making decisions
    • Urgency drops
    • Emotion drops
    • Clarity rises

In other words, this step alone prevents a huge portion of overspending.

03. Use the 24-Hour Pause (Impulse Diffuser)

This pause is one of the most effective ways to avoid overspending Christmas without relying on willpower.

If something catches your eye and wasn’t on your Want-List, you don’t debate it.

You simply:

    • add it to your list
    • pause for 24 hours

The next day, you look at it with a calm brain.
This is where people realise what they actually value.

04. Screenshot Your Carts (The Clarity Fix)

For example, screenshots give you:

    • a simple way to compare
    • a record of every deal
    • fewer open tabs
    • reduced overwhelm
    • protection from panic-buying

This step turns shopping into a calm, logical comparison process.

05. Spend Only From Your Christmas Account (Your Boundary Line)

Your Christmas account isn’t a metaphor — it is a separate, physical bank account dedicated solely to Christmas.

It’s part of my broader Christmas Money System, which teaches you how to decide:

    • how much you actually need
    • how much to set aside each pay
    • and how to avoid the January money hangover

Read the full Christmas Money System here.

Therefore, this account:

    • sets your limit
    • prevents credit card creep
    • blocks BNPL temptation
    • keeps January stress-free
    • and allows you to spend guilt-free on the things you planned for

Instead of relying on willpower, you’re following a boundary you created.

This is where peace comes from.

My Encouragement to You

Most importantly, you deserve a Christmas that feels light, joyful, and stress-free.
When you shop using your system — instead of the retailer’s — you stay in control, you make intentional decisions, and you start the year confident and grounded.

You don’t need perfection.
You just need a plan.

And you have one now.
